The study activities include scientific dives, during which the following sampling methodologies are used: collection of marine organisms; artificial panels; sedimentation traps; video and photographic surveys, including with time-lapse equipment; 3D surveys with photogrammetry; visual census; transplant and environmental restoration techniques.
Field activities are accompanied by laboratory work: observation of morphology, reproductive structures, stomach contents, and associated fauna through optical microscopy; preparation of samples for ultrastructural observation with a scanning electron microscope; histological analyses; cell cultures; aquarium rearing of species for the study of life cycles and behavior; image analysis; 3D image analysis from micro-CT; morphometric analyses.

The researchers involved have carried out numerous scientific expeditions in Mediterranean, tropical (Indonesia, Vietnam, Belize), and polar (Antarctic) regions, and maintain numerous collaborations with researchers from other universities and Italian public and private research institutions (ISMAR, ISPRA, ARPAM, CoNISMa). - Ongoing projects since 2023

- PRIN project. “Corals and other benthic species HIdden LIfe histories. The tools of Behavioral ecology and Stable isotope analysis – CHILI” — funded by MUR and the European Union — NextGenerationEU. Time-lapse imaging and stable isotopes to study species interactions.
- MER project – ISPRA. Reconstruction of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) beds — monitoring.
- “How much is the rent? Animal species inhabiting the vacant holes left by the boring date mussel Lithophaga lithophaga” — funded by the PADI Foundation. Study of bioeroders and biodiversity.
