Abstract: The presence of contaminant mixtures in marine ecosystems represents a growing concern in environmental toxicology. Among these, pharmaceuticals are considered emerging pollutants due to their widespread and continuous release into aquatic environments, often alongside more traditional contaminants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). While many studies have focused on the effects of individual contaminants, relatively little is known about their combined or interactive effects when occurring as complex mixtures.
This thesis aims to investigate the interactive and combined effects of mixtures of selectd pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and PAHs, commonly detected in the marine environment. The Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), a recognized bioindicator species, will be used as a model organism to assess the biological impact of these contaminant combinations. The study will integrate analyses of bioaccumulation with a comprehensive panel of molecular, biochemical, and cellular biomarkers. Considered early warning systems of physiological stress and sub-lethal toxicity, such responses will address mechanistic understanding of the effects induced by contaminant mixtures. Results from this research may contribute to a more realistic environemental risk assessment of marine pollution and provide insight into mixture toxicity under environmentally relevant conditions.
