Introduction
These guidelines are intended to inform the PhD student on the didactic obligations of the Doctorate program, aimed to provide PhD students with a broad educational training for reaching adequate scientific maturity and autonomy in performing research.

PhD students’ activities – CFU breakdown

Similarly to Bachelor and Master degrees, the activity of a PhD student is based on formative credits (CFU). The CFU is considered a measure of the workload of the PhD student. To obtain the PhD degree, a workload of 180 CFU is required. The 180 CFU are equally distributed in the 3-year program (60 CFU/year) and appropriately divided into different activities.
The different activities listed above are classified into the 3 general groups. The Table reports the groups with the relative quantification in terms of CFU:
Thesis workload
120
CFU
Attendance to courses and participation in workshops and internships organized by DISVA
16
CFU
Other activities
44
CFU
Total
180
CFU
The thesis workload (120 CFU) is related to the development of the research on the chosen subject and does not need to be accounted. On the contrary, the remaining 16 and 44 CFU need to be accounted through the activities reported and described hereafter.

PhD students’ activities – Attendance to courses and participation in workshops and internships organized by DISVA (16 CFU)
16 CFU (of 180) should be acquired by attending courses that are divided in "common to various scientific areas or basic" (interdisciplinary, for 6 CFU) and "specific" (disciplinary, for 10 CFU). In particular:

6 CFU of interdisciplinary credits should be obtained by:
- Attendance to lessons common to various scientific areas organized by UNIVPM for 4 CFU. Information can be found at the following link:
 https://www.univpm.it/Entra/Ricerca/Dottorato_di_Ricerca_/Didattica_comune
- Attendance to Computer Science courses for 2 CFU. 8-hour modules (1 CFU each) will be proposed by DiSVA; the student can choose 2 modules of interest. Information can be found at the link below "Lezioni di Informatica":

10 CFU of disciplinary credits can be obtained by freely choosing a set of activities between the various options offered:
- Attendance to specific lessons (8-hour modules, 1 CFU each) organized by DiSVA. Lectures are related to specialized subjects and will be offered by individual teachers. The student can choose one or more lessons of interest. Information can be found at the link below "Lezioni Frontali":
https://learn.univpm.it/course/view.php?id=13026
- Theoretical-practical workshops on advanced instrumentation acquired as "Department of Excellence" or made available by research groups, 24-hour modules, 3 CFU each. A workshop consists of theoretical and practical sessions held by one or more teachers and post-docs, and typically lasts a week. Participation is limited to 3 or 4 students/workshop; the student can choose one or more workshops of interest. Information can be found at the link below "Laboratori Teorico-Pratici sulla Strumentazione Avanzata".

- Individual internship in a DiSVA research lab (or in another UNIVPM Department, upon notification and adherence to the Doctoral training program), 48-hour modules, 6 CFU. The internship will allow the student to acquire interdisciplinary skills on experimental methodologies or scientific fields not available in the group to which the student belongs. For each proposal, the participation is limited to 1 student only; the student will have to attend the host group for about 2 weeks under the supervision of one or more teachers and post-docs from that lab. The research group can propose an individual internship also upon specific request of the doctorate student.  Information can be found at the link below "Esercitazioni Individuali".

Students should use this Table to summarize the yearly-performed "other activities". The Table will be an integral part of the material that each student will have to present to the School council for the annual verification.

Notes on LEARN web site: infos on course reservation
All the activities reported in the LEARN web site are available to PhD students. Students are required to select the preferred activities without exceeding the total number of CFU required.  A course booking service has been activated. Note that:

(*) Student(s) will be selected among the applicants at the closing time for applications. Priority will be based on seniority of PhD enrollment (3rd year > 2nd year > 1st year). However:
- Whoever applies to two or more activities inside the "workshops" group will have priority over the first and no priority over the others eventually selected.
- Whoever applies to two or more activities inside the "internship" group will have priority over the first and no priority over the others eventually selected.
- Whoever has exceeded the necessary credits will have zero priority.
In the case of equal priority, applicants will be interviewed.
